Play Timeout's Guide to Hosting the Ultimate Game Night
So, you've been thinking about bringing some friends around and hosting a night full of games, wine and laughter, but you haven't the slightest clue how to make sure it's a success. While you've been to many similar events in the past, you want to make sure you get everything right so you can host plenty more fun-filled nights in the future.
As well as having some EPIC board games on hand, there are plenty of other things you can do to ensure your friends have an incredible night. These include:
Invite a big group of people
While some board games and card games have their player limitations, others include limitless players. When inviting your friends, always aim for a minimum of 6 guests to ensure the games don't end too quickly. Otherwise, everyone will be heading home before you've served your party pies.
Game night is also a great way for people to come out of their shells, especially when their competitive sides come out. So, if you have friends from different walks of life, this is a great way to bring everyone together and enjoy a night filled with all your favourite people.
Choose games that everyone can play
Every party game has unique quirks and features, making them perfect for specific audiences. However, not every game can be enjoyed by the whole group you've invited. This could be for many reasons, including convoluted rules or limited player tokens. Once you know who will be in attendance, finding a game that each person can easily understand and enjoy will get your night running smoothly.
If you're open to options, having a handful of unique games at the ready gives you the chance to mix it up.
Take it slow
It's natural that once the food and drinks kick in that the game will naturally slow down. While it can be frustrating to see players losing focus and averting their attention to their phones, the music or their own conversation, just taking it easy and letting the game play out at its natural speed will keep everyone smiling.
Don't forget, when someone's focus is constantly wavering, you can always collectively vote to skip their turn too!
Don't set expectations
Every game night pans out differently. Some will be filled with competitiveness and a desire to win, while others will just involve drinks laughs and having fun. Regardless of what you've experienced in the past, going into your night with an open mind and no expectations can ensure that you have the best time.
This is because you won't be worrying about things going wrong or not going to plan. Instead, you will have your mind focused on showing everyone who's boss.
